Position: Library Director                                                             Department: Administration

  • Job Summary:  Oversee department heads and library as a whole to see that work is completed efficiently and accurately.  Keep the library up to date on current policies and review and update policies yearly.  Provide customer service by aiding customers in finding materials and information and showing customers how to use library equipment. Assists with developing training and for all library staff. Hold staff meetings and schedule staff training. Manage the financial needs and reporting needs of the library.  Responsible for updating strategic plans, employee handbook, etc. 
Essential Functions:
  • Listen to customers; provide friendly helpful reference assistance to find what they are seeking.
  • Assist in the creation and follow library policies and procedures when defusing tense situations with customers.
  • Advise the library board on the state of libraries in the area and on the future of libraries.
  • Create library board training.
  • Compile and create monthly library board packets.
  • Prepare and publish ordinances and reports.
  • Administer library budget and financials, which includes working with the auditors and accountant.
  • Establish long and short term goals for the library.
  • Plans, manages and budgets for capital improvements.
  • Monitor library technology, plan for upgrades and additions as needed.
  • Train, supervise and discipline staff as needed.
  • Collect statistics and compile for library board and statistical reports.
  • Hold monthly staff meetings for full-time and biannual staff meetings for all staff or as needed.
  • Assists with planning programming and manages marketing to fulfill the needs of the community.
  • Create and administer surveys to plan for future needs of the library.
  • Responsible for opening or closing the library as needed.
  • Promotes library services to the community and works with the greater library community to promote library services.
  • Keep current by reading journals, library related social media and attending meetings.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner which promotes good working relationships with staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. 
  • Good time management skills; self-motivated. 
  • Patience and understanding. Calm and clear thinking. Creativity is a must.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with patrons and staff.
  • MLIS preferred.
  • 3-5 years experience as director or similar experience preferred.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
  • Requires considerable repetitive motion involving the use of fingers, hands and limbs.
  • Continuous standing, stooping, bending, climbing, sitting, and lifting and pushing of books and other library materials ranging from under one pound to over twenty pounds.
  • Close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; talking; and hearing.

Donations, Memorials and Gifts

The River Valley District Library is grateful for gifts, and its collection has been enriched by donations and contributions from generous donors over the years.  In accepting a gift of materials the library reserves the privilege of deciding whether items donated should be added to the collection.  The material will be judged according to the same standards of selection as those applied to the purchase of new materials.

The library welcomes monetary contributions specifically for book purchases in memorials to or in honor of named individuals. The library also welcomes cash contributions for materials, equipment or a project which is acceptable to the donor - such as a contribution for our new library building expansion. 

No donations can be accepted unless it is given to the library without restrictions unless the Board of Library Trustees has specifically adopted an agreement to do so. Please contact the River Valley District Library for more information: 309-523-3440.
