Tips and Tricks for Beginners
Spring is here, and it’s the perfect time to start planning your garden. Whether you're new to gardening or looking for a simple, low-maintenance way to get started, here are some tips to help you plant with ease.
1. Easy Plants for Beginners
If you’re just starting out, consider planting hardy, low-maintenance plants that thrive in our climate. Some great beginner-friendly options include:
Lettuce, spinach, and peas – These cool-season crops are easy to grow and can be planted early in the season.
Radishes and carrots – These root vegetables are quick-growing and require minimal care.
Sunflowers – These cheerful flowers are easy to grow from seed and can thrive with lots of sun.
Herbs like basil, mint, and chives – Perfect for beginners, herbs are low-maintenance and can grow well in containers or garden beds.
2. When to Start Indoors vs. Outdoors
The timing of when to plant is key for success. The average last frost date is typically in early to mid-April, but it’s always good to keep an eye on local weather forecasts for any late cold snaps.
Start Indoors: For plants that need a longer growing season, like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, it’s best to start seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last frost (around late February to early March). Transplant them outdoors after the last frost when the soil has warmed up.
Start Outdoors: Cool-season plants like lettuce, spinach, and peas can be directly sowed in the ground as early as 4-6 weeks before the last frost. These plants can tolerate the chilly spring temperatures and will grow well in the early season.
